Google DFP Integration (Pre-Roll Video Ads)

Last updated on Oct 06, 2015 02:41PM EDT

Pre-roll Advertising: pre-rolls are promotional video messages that play before viewers reach the content they have selected to watch.

Here is a live player serving a pre-roll:

Here is the same player as it transitions to the live content:

To enable pre-roll advertisements on your Livestream account you will need the following:

  1. Enterprise Livestream Account-
  2. A Google DFP account-
  3. A video file or 3rd party VAST tag to traffic.

Google provides a helpful introduction to DFP here.

This article will walk you through integrating DFP with your Livestream Enterprise plan, and how to traffic pre-roll advertisements to your channel.

In your DFP account navigate to the "Admin" tab on the upper right
In the "Network Settings" you will find your Network code. This is the number you will enter into your Livestream Enterprise account to integrate DFP and Livestream.

You can also find this the network code under your email address in the upper right corner.

After this you will need to create or use an existing ad unit.
Navigate to the “Inventory” Tab towards the upper left corner.

This menu lists ad units. If you are using an existing ad unit, enter the ad unit name into the Livestream field labeled “ad unit path”. Make sure that the ad unit you are using is for video: “400x300v (video / VAST)”

To create a new ad unit click “New ad unit”.

Enter the name and other relevant information.

It is important to mark the size as “400x300v (video / VAST)”. It will not work with any other size.

In this example, you would enter “support-test” as the “Ad unit path” in your Livestream Enterprise account settings.

To traffic an ad to your account you will need to create an order. To do this, go to the “Orders” tab on the upper left. From there create a “New order.”

Enter all of the relevant information in the “New order” and “New line item” sections.

Note: The Trafficker is
someone within your organization who is responsible for uploading creatives and tracking the performance of this order and its line items. This person's user role must include the following permission: "Edit orders and line items, and submit for approval." That field will contain that person's email address.

Be sure to mark the “Inventory sizes” “Video VAST.”

From there you’ll fill out the rest of the information until you get to the targeting at the bottom of the page.

Select 'Inventory' and you will notice you can select your ad unit that you created earlier.

After clicking on “Ad units,” you will see the one you created and that is what you will select. After clicking “Include,” your ad unit will appear on the right in the “Selected Criteria” area.

After that you will click on the button at the bottom that says “Save and Upload 400x300v creative set”. You can also click 'Save' and then click 'Add creative sets' at the top of the page.

From here you will be given 3 different options for uploading a creative. To do this, select “Linear”.

Note: Overlay, Skippable and Display Unit creatives are not supported by the Livestream player at this time.

In the next page you will fill out the information about the video you are uploading and drag the file onto the page.

You can save while it is transcoding your video. After that you will need to approve the order. After approving the order, DFP will warn you that there might not be enough ad inventory. You can disregard this message and proceed because DFP does not have any historical data to forecast what is available.

In summary, you will need:
  1. Livestream Enterprise Account
  2. Google DFP Account
Then follow the steps outlined above:
  1. Connect your Enterprise and DFP accounts with the correct Network Code and ad unit name
  2. Traffic video ads in DFP3
  3. Go live!

Customers with an Enterprise account who are using the Livestream Studio software can use the same integration to serve live mid-roll insertions. This means that if you are producing an event and you want to your viewers to receive an ad or multiple ads in the middle of the broadcast, you can trigger them with a button in the software.

Instructions for the mid-roll functionality can be found here.
